Minutes

Attendance:

  • status of segmented vs. hybrid downselect
    • meet with change control board just before Christmas (Dec. 15)
      • downselect by end of November
      • couple page report, Pugh matrix
      • prioritize what is important for the downselect
    • issues
      • coil forces
      • blocky models for upstream and several for segmented ds
        • improved winding design for US (more realistic, with leads)
        • second blocky for the US torus (b/c exceeded J) w/ 6 turns
    • section views down the length with clearances
      • when will need new envelopes (what is the turnaround time?)
      • clearances with current envelopes are good enough for hybrid vs. segmented downselect
  • CTD450 summary
    • CTD 403 - literature search - best resin (cyanate esther) to use
    • conductor half-lapped with S- or E- glass cloth (probably S, b/c better with CTD403)
    • tests on short-beam shear stress at CERN (but at 4K)
    • what about 70 degrees?
    • primed with CTD 450 - stronger initially
    • the stresses are ~11 MPa (during curing and cool-down)
    • thermal stresses during operation ~5 MPa
    • stresses at corners ~25 MPa
    • primed w/ CTD 450 (assuming 15% reduction in strength) is 61 MPa final shear strength
    • can we do stress tests with thermal cycling and dose?
    • need to make sure we have checked with worst-case offsets (I think we have)
    • 70 C, vacuum pumping, irradiation - trying our best to destroy it!
    • physicists will read the dose/strength papers
  • optimization of the upstream collimator region
    • merging - Chandan (not here)
    • shielding - Naz
  • nomenclature
